  You  made some good points.  Masuji does seem to be in deep thought constantly, maybe reliving mistakes he made in the past.  It does however help to immerse the reader more into the storyline because he (Masuji) is the narrator and he describes the events like you the reader are experiencing them yourself. good pictures by the way.
